Introduction

 

The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Awareness training course will inform delegates of the COSHH Regulations (2002) as well as providing them with knowledge of risk assessment and hazards. This course is ideal for those handling hazardous substances daily at work that have no prior knowledge of the subject, or those who wish to refresh their current understanding.

By the end of this course learners will:

 

Know how to identify hazardous substances in the workplace.

Understand the ill-health effects that hazardous substances can cause.

Understand COSHH legal regulations, including the responsibilities of employers and employees.

Know what to consider for a COSHH risk assessment.

Understand the importance of health surveillance for employees who work with hazardous substances.

 

Objectives

 

-Delegates attending this training seminar will:

-Understand the concepts of substance hazardous to health and where do they exist.

-Understand the estimation and evaluation of risks - Qualitative, Semi-Quantitative and Quantified Risks.

 

 

-Techniques for Hazard Identification and Analysis - Problems to Health from Hazardous Substances.

-Understand COSHH studies their benefits and their short comings.

-Understand the requirements of a Team Leader or Facilitator, scribe and team members during COSHH studies.

-Be able to facilitate a COSHH study.

 

Training Methodology

 

Participants will learn by taking part in exercises, syndicate and group workshops, as well as looking at case studies and real life situations.

This interactive training course includes the following training methodologies as a percentage of the total tuition hours:

  • 30% Workshops & Work Presentations, Techniques
  • 20% Based on Case Studies & Practical Exercises
  • 20% Videos, Software & General Discussions
  • Pre and Post Test

Outline

 

The course is divided into six accessible, interactive modules and includes an assessment at the end:

 

DAY 1

What do we mean by 'Hazardous Substances'?

What is a substance hazardous to health under COSHH(NI)?

What is not a substance hazardous to health under COSHH(NI)?

What COSHH(NI) requires

What substances are present, in what amounts and in what form?

What harmful effects are possible?

Where and how are the substances handled and used?

What harmful substances are given off?

Who could be affected, to what extent, for how long, and in what circumstances?

How likely is it that that exposure will happen?

What precautions need to be taken to prevent or control exposure and thereby comply with the rest of the COSHH Regulations?

DAY 2

-Introduction of appropriate control measures

-Which control measures are appropriate to your work situation in order to deal effectively with any hazardous substances that may be present. This may mean preventing exposure by:

-Changing the process, or removing the hazardous substance.

-Substituting safer substances.

-Or where this is not practicable:

-Totally enclosing the process.

-Using partial enclosure and extraction equipment.

-General ventilation.

-Using safe systems of work and handling procedures.

DAY 3

-Prohibitions relating to certain substances Application of regulations Regulation

-Assessment of the risk to health created by work involving substances hazardous to health

-Prevention or control of exposure to substances hazardous to health

-Use of control measures etc

 -Maintenance, examination and testing of control measures

 -Monitoring exposure at the workplace

 -Health surveillance

-Information, instruction and training for persons who may be exposed to substances hazardous to health

-Arrangements to deal with accidents, incidents and emergencies

-Provisions relating to certain fumigations

DAY 4

Problems to Health From Hazardous Substances

-Common health hazards,

-The occupations most at risk, routes of entry, dermatitis, asthma, what to do if you develop symptoms and RIDDOR.

-Identifying Hazardous Substances -

-Chemical labelling,

-Safety data sheets,

-Flammable substances, liquids, dusts and gases, asthma-causing substances, asbestos and lead.

DAY 5

COSHH Risk Assessment and Control Measures

- Identifying the hazards, deciding who might be harmed and how,

- Evaluating the risks,

 -Substance substitution,

 -Principles of good control practice, hierarchy of control measures,

 -Work processes and equipment,

 -Personal protective equipment,

 -Safe systems of work

 -Provision of first aid.

-Prepare plans and procedures to deal with accidents, incidents and emergencies

-Ensure employees are properly informed, trained and supervised
